Holiday Candles DIY with Essential Oils
DIY ESSENTIAL OILS
This post is a simple craft idea for making your own scented candles with essential oils. For this tutorial, we will use the Christmas Spice scent but you can use these instructions to substitute for your favorite scent or create your own blends. If you are making these for gifts or to sell for your handmade business, consider purchasing our customizable label pack from Etsy. For the free version with our company name (a bug & a bean), you can download a set of the labels from this blog post.
Mixing the Scent
For this recipe I will provide mixing instructions to craft the “Christmas Spice” holiday scent.
Christmas Spice
Mix the following quantities of pure essential oils to create the blend. We want about 10 drops per ounce of candle wax so I have adjusted the recipe to make 60 drops.
- 30 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
- 18 drops Clove Essential Oil
- 12 drops Orange Essential Oil
Making the Candles
You will need the following materials for this recipe:
- 7 ounce candle jar with lid
- Soy Wax for Candle Making with Wicks
- Digital Cooking Thermometer
- Wick Stickers
Follow these steps to make the candles:
- Clean and dry your containers thoroughly. Attach the wicks to the bottom of the containers using wick stickers or glue dots.
- Fill a pot with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the wax in a heat-safe pitcher and set it in the simmering water. Heat the wax until it's completely melted, stirring occasionally.
- Use your thermometer to check when the wax reaches around 185°F (85°C). At this point, add all 40 drops of your essential oils blend (10 drops per ounce of wax). Stir gently to make sure the oils are mixed.
- Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared containers. Leave about half an inch of space at the top.
- Use chopsticks or pencils to center the wicks and keep them upright while the wax cools.
- Allow the candles to cool and harden completely, which may take several hours or even a day or two. This curing process helps the scent bind with the wax and ensures a better burn.
- Before burning your candles, trim the wicks to about ¼ inch.
- Add your labels to the jar for a professional look!
